A Family Value

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 45

This week's theme is A Family Value, and I have to admit, I struggled with it.

I considered all the usual suspects: honesty, loyalty, hard work, faith, and family first. But the more I thought about it, the more they sounded like something embroidered on a pillow rather than an accurate description of the families I've spent years researching.

The truth is, my ancestors were complicated people. They made good decisions and bad ones. They loved, lied, persevered, abandoned, sacrificed, and sometimes took their secrets to the grave.

And perhaps that's the value I've come to appreciate most through genealogy: Truth.

Not because it's always comfortable or flattering, but because every family deserves to have its story told as honestly as possible.

After all, there's a reason I named my website The Relative Truth.
